Detangling 101

Proper detangling is very beneficial to natural hair, but sometimes it can be a pain. Here are some tips to cut your detangling time in half to avoid knots, unnecessary breakage and save your arms.

Tips

  • Work in sections– This may seem like it will take longer than brushing your hair all at once, but to throughly get through tangles it is easier to work in smaller parts of hair.
  • Braid as you go– Once you completed detangling a section, it is best to twist or braid it away from the hair that hasn’t been brushed out.
  • Pre-poo if needed- Before wash days it is always easier to use a pre-poo before you shampoo. This can help soften the hair for an easier detangle prior to washing it.
  • Use a good brush
  • Work on damp or wet hair– Detangling dry hair leads to more breakage and damage, so it’s always best to detangle hair that is wet.
  • Avoid buns/ponytails– I love me a good slick-back, but sometimes my slick-back doesn’t love me. Leaving your hair in buns and ponytails for prolonged periods can cause unwanted knots and tangles to
